About

Welcome to What’s Your Story?, a site about stories and storytelling and how to use and tell those as you go about reinventing yourself and your business in light of the revolutionary changes going on in our society. There will be some forays into the fields of writing, marketing, sales, public relations, and social media and networking topics since those are all part and parcel of what’s involved in the reinvention process.

I am also experimenting with a daily post that shares and curates links to the content that I consume over the course of each day. The plugin I’m using is providing a bit of a roller coaster ride at the moment so please bear with me on that. The posts I link to in those shared items all deal with change, stories, writing, business issues, marketing and pr, social media and networking. If you’re pressed for time over the course of your day it’s my hope that these will help you to keep up with current thinking on these matters and give you some food for thought that will nourish your efforts both personally and professionally.

I started this site/blog as a way to talk about and discuss all of the changes going on in our lives brought about by the ending of the Gutenberg Age and the rapid rise of what historians will likely call the Internet Age. There are several posts on the site dealing with this. If you thought the Gutenberg Age ended with his death, and what I mean when I talk about that, you might want to read this one and the comments on it to get some idea.

All around us, institutions and institutional trust are being shattered. It’s as if the entire fiber of what we grew up believing in and working for is being shredded. No job seems safe and the American Dream, well, it’s beginning to look like it’s just that, a dream fading as we wake to face the day. But in the middle of all of this change is a wonderful opportunity. The opportunity to reinvent yourself and your business. The opportunity to live your dreams and to tell your stories. The futurist Rolf Jensen said that storytellers will be the heroes of the 21st century. He said that in the late 1990s.

In business, it will be stories that differentiate one company from another, one product from the other. Those companies that can invite us as consumers into their stories, that reach out and make an emotional connection with us, will be the ones that grow and prosper. And personally, you have the opportunity to help with that, to tell those stories, professionally and personally, and to make those connections.

If you’ve managed to reinvent yourself or your business in the midst of all of this, and you feel like telling us your story, feel free to share it here. Leave a comment with one of the posts, use the comment form, send an email if that works better for you, or write a guest post to tell us about it. I know that it will be inspiring and uplifting to those just beginning the process or to those still working on doing the same.

If you want some help with coming to terms with all of this change, with reinventing yourself or your business, that’s what I’m doing now. The Story Telling, Marketing and Copy Writing pages go into more detail on those areas.
