Six Aspects of Storytelling pt 2: Narrative

When I think about writing a comic book story, one of the first aspects that I try to construct is the basic narrative of the story. For the purposes of this article let me define narrative as the events (action, dialogue, thoughts, or narration) that are observed by the reader that progress a story. To me the narrative is the foundation, on which all other aspects of the story rest. It’s important that I take a lot of time to think about the events that are to take place in the story.   At this point, I’m not thinking about HOW I want to present those events, as that falls under the “Style” of the story (another of the six aspects of storytelling). At this point in my creative process I’m merely thinking about the events that are to take place, the character’s interactions with those events, and where those events will take the story.
