Interview: Revolution’s Cecil On A Career Of Storytelling

“I think that the whole idea of interactive narrative from a creative perspective, from a theoretical perspective, is actually fascinating. What we are doing is obviously pioneering a totally new form of entertainment…”

Storyteller Eric Wolf to Receive National Oracle Award for Work on the Art of Storytelling Show

“Eric Wolf (Brother Wolf) will be presented with the Oracle Award in recognition of his work as producer and host of the Art of Storytelling with Brother Wolf Show during the last evening of the National Storytelling Conference on July 31st, 2010 in Los Angeles, California. The National Storytelling Network (NSN) gives the Oracle Award for Distinguished National Service to individuals who contribute their time and energy in an exemplary manner on the national level.”

Living history worth preserving

“There is history all around us. Unfortunately, more and more of it is disappearing every day. This history isn’t a building, a monument, or any type of artifact on public display in a museum. The history I’m talking about is living, breathing history – people.”

Creators of Transmedia Stories™ 5: Danny Bilson

“Entertainment is on the verge of something new; no not 3D, but a new generation of transmedia story experiences. Story worlds that, in a calculated fashion, cross from media to media providing players with new ways to experience, and immerse themselves in, an authored interactive world. In the past this was done solely for purposes of merchandising and franchise expansion, but in the present it’s being used to create fantastic story experiences.”

Business, Branding and the Art of Storytelling

“One of the most compelling ways to launch and build a business or brand is to create a legend around it. Tell a deeply compelling story that draws in not only clients and prospects, but employees, partners, collaborators, mentors and evangelists.
I’m not talking about fabricating a story from thin air, but, rather, bringing substantially more art and deliberation to the way you craft and share yours. Done right, with integrity and authenticity, it can transform the way you do business and make everything from day to day operations to sales and marketing infinitely more easy.”

jawbone.tv

“Storytelling insights and innovations from around the planet.

Jawbone.tv showcases the evolution of digital narrative in our modern world, including film, interactive, animation, advertising, transmedia and much more.”

Storytelling…the profession

“I really hope Julia comes back in because honstly I am fascinated by the idea of someone making their living off of being a storyteller. What a life…A PROFESSSIONAL Storyteller!”

What Stories Does Your Office Building Tell About You?

What a creative solution from Park Howell.

“Not only do we see people stop and read through all of the words, but we’ve added a new tenant to our creative campus who was lured in by the “energy” expressed by the storytelling nouns. We’ve seen a dramatic uptick in traffic to our website as people and prospects want to learn more about Park&Co. And even the grandmother of our son’s best friend asked what was up with our modifiers.”

Ojai Storytelling Festival Not Just for Kids

“To anyone who hasn’t experienced storytelling before, I would say first and foremost it is really fun, and really compelling,” said David Gonzalez, a New York-based professional teller who has traveled the world sharing his craft for 27 years. “It is life in vivid 4-D: height, width, depth and soul. When a storyteller is weaving a tale, bringing it to life, time and space shift and that fourth dimension of soul is really active and real. It is joyful.”

Narrative

This is a Slideshare set of 8 slides so it’s not time consuming. There’s some interesting ones in there though.

Mammy proudly rode with outlaw Jesse James

Quite a little story.

“Sometimes her recollections seemed historically suspect but entertaining nonetheless. Perhaps she embellished. She was, after all, a storyteller and what a storyteller she was. I miss her to this day. I miss her stories too.”

Thinking Like a Storyteller: Words of Wisdom from Cindy Chastain on the use of storytelling in for interactiondesign (IXDA 10 Video)

This is well worth the time investment to watch (47 minutes video).

Here are a few quotes from the presentation:

“How can we, as designers, provide cues that will deepen that narrative connection?”

“What can we learn from the discipline of storytelling that will help us design for more meaningful and engaging product experiences?”

“If we can move away from thinking of products in terms of interfaces and start thinking of them as representations or environments, in which agents perform actions, we will get us to a place where we can design more fluid and engaging dialogues/experiences.”

“Deep” Point of View

This is well worth reading.

“So what does “Show, don’t tell” mean? It means don’t let your narrator “tell” the reader everything. It means the narrator should describe the scene (that’s his only real function) and then step aside so the reader can experience the story right along with the characters, as if the reader is there, in the story, in the midst of the characters. When a reader is that engaged in your story line, he’s less likely to put down your story and find something else to do.”
